Rincon Hill History – 2nd Street Cut (1869)

SFist.com features Rincon Hill’s infamous 2nd Street Cut that happened in 1869 and shaved about 100 feet of dirt/sand off of Rincon Hill so that products could be moved from the piers along South Beach to the Market Street area without so many horses being killed and time wasted getting over what was once a formidable Rincon Hill.

The Rincon Hill Neighborhood Association was created in 2007 with the common goal of maintaining and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses in Rincon Hill, a growing neighborhood in San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) District bounded (roughly) by 2nd Street, Bryant Street, Mission Street and The Embarcadero. RHNA's officers, committee representatives and members meet regularly to take up issues that affect the lives of Rincon Hill residents, merchants and businesses.
