Please let you fellow dog owners know that the Beale and Bryant future dog park site will be open this Saturday, March 13th for volunteers to help clean up the lot a bit and for anyone to bring their dog(s) to run around and play a bit (9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.).

From Marty Coressel ….

This Saturday, March 13th is the second Saturday of the month, so we will be opening up the Beale / Bryant Street lot from 9:00 am till 11:30 am. Weather is looking good so bring the dogs on out for a romp.

We continue to do a great job keeping the weeds near the fence and sidewalk under control and will focus on those again this Saturday.

Today, Caltrans said that they are still targeting this October to start construction along with the many other West Approach Landscaping projects. This Open Space & Dog Park will be the largest of the efforts, so we started discussion on planning a site groundbreaking event and having a “Coming Soon” type sign posted. Hope to have more on these items to share shortly. All good news!

Hope for sunshine and see you on Saturday morning.

Cheers – Marty

FYI – Remember – Owners are legally responsible for their dog(s) and any damage and/or injury caused by their dog(s).

Our friend Michael Chao, Project Manager with Community Housing Partnership, has provided an online link for the drawings of designs for their supportive housing project on Folsom Street at Essex presented to neighbors at the community meeting held at The Metropolitan a couple of Wednesdays ago. You can find the drawings posted online if you’re interested to see the ideas discussed. Currently, the site is a surface parking lot.

I have not yet received any communication from the Redevelopment Agency concerning the Transbay CAC meeting tentatively scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month, so I am uncertain whether there will be a meeting in March and if they’ll be considering recommending a design for Block 11A or not at their next meeting.

From our friend and community public safety advocate Ken Craig:

Hi All :

I am writing to ask you to seriously consider attending the San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting at 2pm on Tuesday March 9, held on the 4th floor of San Francisco City Hall, to speak in support of Supervisor Bevan Dufty’s resolution to enhance penalties for anyone who assaults a Patrol Special Police officer.

Supervisor Dufty would greatly appreciate the public support of as many individuals as possible at the meeting. I’m sending out this information to anyone who may be able to attend and speak in person.

Three Patrol Special Police officers have been assaulted in the line of duty since December of 2009 when Officer Jane Warner had her arm broken while trying to arrest an aggressive male outside of the Trigger bar. Another Patrol Special Police officer was very recently knocked out in the Tenderloin area when engaging with a suspect.

At present, Patrol Special Police officers do not enjoy the same protection that SFPD officers do. Indeed they do not enjoy the same protection that parking enforcement officials, MUNI operators, and DPW workers do. They put their lives quite literally on the line every day on behalf of the citizens of San Francisco, and they minimally deserve the same protections as our SFPD and parking enforcement officers.

I therefore encourage you to attend the Board of Supervisors meeting and speak in support of Supervisor Dufty’s resolution and in support of the Patrol Special Police and the incredible job they do. If you are unable to attend in person as I am, please consider sending an e-mail to your supervisor, or to the entire board of supervisors. I am including their e-mail addresses to make this easier.

Mayor Gavin Newsom : gavin.newsom@sfgov.org

San Francisco Police Commission: sfpd.commission@sfgov.org

SFPD Chief of Police : sfpd.online@sfgov.org

SF Patrol Special Police Officers Assocaition : sfpatrol@earthlink.net

Board of Supervisors : Eric.L.Mar@sfgov.org, Michela.Alioto-Pier@sfgov.org, David.Chiu@sfgov.org, Carmen.Chu@sfgov.org, Ross.Mirkarimi@sfgov.org, Chris.Daly@sfgov.org, Sean.Elsbernd@sfgov.org, Bevan.Dufty@sfgov.org, David.Campos@sfgov.org, Sophie.Maxwell@sfgov.org, John.Avalos@sfgov.org

Sincerely,

Ken Craig
President

We also support and assist in the development of Citizen Walking Patrols and advocate for general safety and security measures at the neighborhood, city, state and national level.

Please join us at the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific’s Library Room (450 Harrison Street) at 6pm this evening (March 2, 2010) to learn about legislation currently under review to help to either stimulate the building of currently approved developments (like the second tower at One Rincon Hill or 201 Folsom) or to incentivize developers who own empty lots (like 45 Lansing and 399 Fremont) to temporarily re-purpose the lots for specific public benefits.

Michael Yarne from the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development has been working on both pieces of legislation, introducing the “developer stimulus” legislation to the Planning Commission in late January and the “green development agreement” legislation to the Planning Commission just last week. He will be the main speaker this evening followed by Steve Kuklin, representing Fifield Companies (owners of the 399 Fremont Street development site), who will discuss some interesting ideas they have for temporarily repurposing the 399 Fremont Street lot until they’re ready to build their condo development.

If you cannot join us this evening, pencil in our April 6th meeting at 6pm also at the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific in the Library Room where we’ll learn about the SFPark program from the SFMTA.

Rincon Hill residents received a “Notice of Planned Street Excavation” today from Esquivel Grading & Paving Co. The notice indicates that Harrison Street will be ground down and repaved from approximately March 29, 2010 until June 30, 2010 with work happening Monday through Friday, 7am until 3pm and Saturday and Sunday, 8am to 5pm.

The 24-hour emergency contact related to the project is Esquivel Grading & Paving, Inc. at 415-354-4870.

Additional information can be garnered from San Francisco’s Department of Public Works’s Public Affairs Officer, Bill Adams, at 415-437-7038.

The only downside of the repaving without any pedestrian safety enhancements is that the smoother roads might encourage even more excessive speeding by drivers, endangering pedestrians, but we can hope that won’t be the case, eh?
