Preview Design of Supportive Housing Project on Folsom at Essex

Michael Chao from Community Housing Partnership contacted me last week to ask that I encourage interested Rincon Hill neighbors to attend this Thursday’s Transbay CAC meeting at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 2nd Floor, starting at 5:30pm. CHP and their partners in the Block 11a Supportive Housing project (Folsom Street at Essex Street) will present their design schematic for the building. It includes some open space along Essex Street. CHP would love to have some Rincon Hill neighbors attend to take a look at the design and provide any helpful input that folks living near and most familiar with the area can offer.

Mission Bay Families Monthly Meeting

On February 28th at 10am at Axis Cafe on 8th Street (near 16th Street), the next Mission Bay Families monthly meeting will happen. This group welcomes families from Mission Bay and other SoMa waterfront neighborhoods. The tentative agenda for February 28th includes ….

We are going to try and meet on the third Sunday of each month at
10:00 am. If you can’t make it but have something to add let us know!
We picked Axis because they have a nice out door play area for kids
and great food!

Agenda:
Sunday February 28th 10:00 am at Axis Cafe 1201 8th Street

Grants: Kim will update us on the next set of grants we should go
after for the playground.

SFUSD: Sarah will give an update on the new school site and recent
communication with the school district about getting to know our
families.

Events: Heather and Arpita have been working on a table display for up
coming spring events.

Outreach: Sarah will put the new web site up Sunday Feb 14th. And
have the poster and cards for review.

SFMOMA Raises $250 Million to Expand

Exciting news from SFMOMA ….

SFMOMA is pleased to announce today that it has received landmark contributions totaling more than $250 million to expand the museum and double its endowment. Making up more than half of a projected $480 million campaign goal, these pledges from museum leadership will fuel SFMOMA’s plans to triple its gallery and public spaces in order to offer enhanced programs and showcase the Fisher Collection, one the world’s finest private collections of modern and contemporary art. Members will get a first look at the collection this summer when the exhibition Calder to Warhol: Introducing The Fisher Collection is on view from June 25 through September 19.

The museum is also delighted to announce that its agreement with the Fisher family to house their unparalleled art collection will be extended from 25 to 100 years. The Fisher Collection will be on display in a new wing that will be built as part of SFMOMA’s expansion. The museum is launching an international search to select an architect to design the expansion.

Wholistic Salon at Sailors’ Union of the Pacific Building

One of the folks I met at tonight’s Rincon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting to discuss park plans for 333 Harrison was a really nice guy named Barry London. Barry has leased out the old school barber shop inside of the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific and offers pure and organic hair/body treatments and goods by appointment. His business is called Itzal Goode, and he refers to it as a wholistic salon. If you’d like to learn more or set up an appointment, call Barry at 415-902-9321.

Belgian Waffles on Tuesdays at Tehama and 1st Streets

Thanks to Everyblock.com, I just learned that the delicious Waffle Mania Truck with sugar belgian waffles truck that sells waffles over at Civic Center’s Wednesday Farmers Market plans to park and sell their waffles in the Rincon Hill neighborhood at 1st and Tehama on Tuesdays for lunch hours. I don’t know the source of the info …. so don’t be mad at me if it turns out to be just gossip.

Shanghai 1930 Closed

After enjoying a half priced burger at Perry’s on Steuart Street, I walked past a dim Shanghai 1930 restaurant entry. When I got home, I confirmed that Shanghai 1930 is closed. Owner George Chen has a new upscale chinese restaurant opening up at 101 California, according to the entry on Eater SF.

On the other side of Rincon Hill, I highly recommend that you say hello to a 4-month old Indian restaurant called Bindi at 28 Second Street (close to Market Street). They’re open 5pm until 10pm for dinner …. even on Sundays!

Agenda for Harrison Street Park Meeting at Sailor’s Union

Just received this from Isabel Wade regarding tomorrow’s Rincon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting (Tuesday, February 2nd at 6pm at Sailors’ Union of the Pacific, 450 Harrison Street, at 1st Street) that will be focused on Harrison Street Park Planning:

Just a reminder that our second to last meeting will be held tomorrow
night at the Sailor’s Union (enter at 1st and Harrison) from 6-8pm,
including refreshments, of course! We will be looking at some exciting
design concepts that Katy and Cliff have developed based on your
suggestions about park features and then voting on which features we
definitely want in our most likely final plan.

Second, we will be talking about your design ideas for these features!
This is a good chance for you to express your creative ideas about how
the features might look. Third, we will brainstorm about ’sustainable’
features that we might like to see in the park, such as LED lighting,
compost bins etc. Finally, we will discuss security concepts for the
park, and particularly whether to have a fence and what it might look
like.

Don’t worry if you can’t come as we will put a ballot on the website
Wed morning; this ballot will be up for one week until February 10th.
We’ll follow up with another email and let you know when it is up.

From our friend Neal Patel with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, an invitation to register for your spot in a free urban cycling workshop scheduled for Thursday, April 1st from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the South Beach Harbor Services Building’s Community Room.

Free Urban Cycling Workshops

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition hosts two part bike education classes for new cyclists who want to ride in traffic safely, and for experienced cyclists who want to brush up on their skills. Register today and save your place in one of these free urban cycling workshops! A course at the South Beach Harbor Community Room will be held on Thursday, April 1, 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

Classes cover loads of information including how to choose the right bike and properly fit a helmet, tips for the safest ways to ride in traffic, techniques to avoid or deal with road hazards, the best way to lock up your bike, how to use a bike in combination with public transit, cyclists’ legal rights and responsibilities, and much more.
