Perdue Foods LLC has just issued a recall of roughly 2,148 pounds of chicken sausage products which they report might be contaminated with additional, synthetic materials. The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service announced this recall on May 6, 2017.
The Gainesville, GA-based company reports a discovery of plastic in some of these products. So far, three customers have complained of blue plastic material; and that is all, thankfully.
The recalled product in question is the Perdue Harvestland Italian-Style Organic Chicken Sausage with a package code of 64405 and a sell-by or freeze-by date of June 25 and an establishment number of P-2617 printed on the packages. It affects more than 1,400 24-oz packages.
The US Food Safety Inspection Service routinely conducts recall efficacy checks in order to verify that recalling firms properly notify their customers of associated recalls and that these steps are properly taken to make certain these products are no longer available on store shelves (or even in home freezers) so that customers cannot be affected by them.
According to Andrea Staub, a senior vice president of Perdue Farms (a Perdue Foods parent company), “We determined the source was plastic from a pair of safety goggles that was inadvertently introduced into the raw material before the sausages were stuffed.”
She goes on to say, “This would have resulted in a minimal amount of consumer packages potentially containing sausages with the plastic. However, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all packages of sausages produced in the same product run.”
In the recall, the company urges that people who have purchased this particular product should either throw it away or return it to the retailer where they purchased the product. Fortunately, there have been no report of injuries or other problems from eating this sausage, reports the USDA.
